Singapore Passport Overseas Application Procedures (Tips)

Singaporeans who live overseas upon the need to renew their passport arises, can either fly back to Singapore or renew their passport in the country of their residence. This renewal can be done either through scheduling an appointment with the overseas mission or through an online application.

I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, and have an Indonesian family. Therefore, I contacted the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Jakarta (Singapore Embassy in Jakarta).

Here is the Singapore passport application process:

Step 1: Fill out the required application forms.

The Singapore Embassy of Jakarta e-mailed my application forms to fill out. If the Singaporean who needs to apply for a passport is under 16 years old, the consenting parent or legal guardian would have to complete it on behalf of the Singaporean.

Step 2: Prepare printout photographs following the requirements.

There will be a specific set of Singapore passport photo requirements that the applicant needs to follow.

The Singapore Embassy in Jakarta required me to provide 2 pieces of 3.5cm wide x 4.5cm high photograph. This had to be printed on a matte or doff paper. Singaporeans should not be wearing a white shirt as the photograph should be taken with a white background. Step 3: Bring all the required documents to the overseas mission.

There was a requirement from the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta to confirm the appointment date and time with the consular before arrival. Upon meeting the consular, the Singaporean has to bring the completed Singapore passport application form, photographs, and all the other required documents.

These other required documents include the current Singaporean passport and identity card or passport of the consenting parent or legal guardian (if applicable).

If the Singaporean’s passport is still valid for more than 9 months upon application, a self-explanatory letter is required. The Singapore Embassy in Jakarta provided a form for the self-explanatory letter should I need it.

Step 4: Pay the passport application fee in cash.

The Singapore Embassy in Jakarta required me to bring Rp. 835,000 ($56.72) in cash.

Step 5: Collect the Singapore passport within more or less 4 weeks.

The Singaporean must come in person to the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta. On average, the Singapore passport can be collected in more or less 4 weeks.

Alternative: Online Passport Application

For the online application of the Singapore passport, I went through the corporate website of the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority. This costs S$70 SGD ($51.58). However, the Singaporean applicant would still need to come in person to meet the consular in the overseas mission. This has to be done before the passport collection.
